Going to work often means you’re supposed to leave your rights at the door. Without a union, companies have the authority and the power to treat you disrespectfully, underpay you, or fire you for no reason at all. When it’s company against an individual we know who wins.

That’s why nearly half a million workers have joined UNITE HERE. We’re a union of workers in hotels, retail and manufacturing. By joining together, workers have the power necessary to win improvements in wages, benefits and working conditions. By negotiating union contracts and taking direct action, we demand and receive the respect that we’re entitled to.

At the New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board of UNITE HERE, we represent workers in New Jersey and New York. Our membership is diverse; men and women from over 20 different countries, speaking more than 20 different languages. Over the last 5 years, we have doubled in size, adding more than 1,000 hotel workers in 2005. We’ve have a reputation as a strong and aggressive union. Our members fight hard to win the changes that are important to them. They’ve overcome big obstacles in order to gain rights on the job.

Organizing a union in this country isn’t easy. Employers like things the way they are, in other words they decide everything. But with dedicated leadership and a willingness to stand together, our members have shown that we can overcome strong resistance from the boss.
